Job Designation

The Project Manager is responsible for delivering the assigned projects within the stated cost, quality and schedule requirements. The Project Manager works closely with all involved functions (Engineering, Program/Product Management, Sales, Quality, Operations) and external stakeholders (customer, suppliers, sub-tiers, authorities) to lead and manage engineering development projects.

Job Core Responsibilities

Project Planning:

Before project kick-off (PLM Phase 1 for new product developments), the Project Manager shall work closely with Engineering and the other involved functions to develop cost and budget information, schedules and resource requirements, in support of Sales & Marketing proposals. The goal in this phase is to ensure that all conditions are satisfied to start the project:

  • Work scope / statement of work is defined and understood by all involved parties,

  • A viable engineering concept exists,

  • The main risks are identified and mitigation actions are documented

  • A budget supported by a consolidated cost breakdown including risks and make/buy policy has been established and agreed upon

  • A master schedule exists and satisfies an agreed set of milestones and deliverables. Clear project closure criteria shall be defined, as well as handover to operations

  • The required resources are identified and agreed with Line management.

In this phase, the Project Manager shall develop a preliminary project plan including: Description of the project scope, identification of the project stakeholders, master schedule with timeline, budget, statement of work and deliverables, project closure criteria, applicable processes, project organization and governance, communication with the stakeholders (internal or external), risk management. The Project Manager shall communicate the project plan and verify that each person involved in the project has a solid understanding of their role in the project. This includes gaining commitments from functional leaders for the needed resource allocations in a matrix organization.

Project execution:

In the course of the development (PLM phases 2-4 for new product developments), the Project Manager shall follow the established guidelines for project management process. During project execution, the Project Manager shall:

  • lead the cross-functional Project Team

  • engage internal and/or external resources to ensure fulfilment of the project

  • work with the team to solve any problems that arise, engage all necessary actions to deliver the project in due time, cost and quality

  • maintain an up-to-date project plan and the associated risk register, change ledger and action lists

  • monitor project performance

  • monitor and track any scope changes, ensuring in particular that customer-generated costs or delays are captured and communicated for appropriate action

  • manage internal and external communication

  • support SS&M in commercial / contractual discussions with the Customer

  • report on project progress to customer, involved internal participants, and senior management.

Continuous Improvement:

  • generate lessons learned as they occur

  • be part of process improvement initiatives when required.

Job Specifications

Education: Post-secondary degree in Engineering or equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience that will allow successful performance of job expectations

Years Experience: 5-7 years of relevant experience in aviation in a development and/or sustaining environment

  • 5 years of experience in Project Management

  • 5 years of experience within an electronics manufacturing environment for aviation equipment

  • Desire to continuously increase personal capabilities

  • Self-motivated and ability to motivate others

  • Proven track record of successful project management via completions, released to production

  • Strong knowledge of FAA and regulatory design requirements including DO-160 and DO-178

  • Proficient in all MS Office applications

  • Proficient in MS Project

  • Desire to continuously increase personal capabilities and design skills

  • Possess a strong technical background to understand and evaluate the technical specifications, requirements and capabilities associated with the project.

  • Ability to adapt and respond to changes in environment and priorities

  • Ability to work independently and interface with cross-functional disciplines; using excellent interpersonal skills to drive tasks to completion

  • Self motivated with problem solving and decision making skills

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to develop clear and detailed plans
