Children''s Mercy Hospitals & Clinics High School Student Volunteer in Kansas City, Missouri

High School Student Volunteer Position Description:

o Must be 16 at the start of the volunteer session.

o Three-hour weekly commitment in a set schedule and volunteer location.

o School Year: 50 hours required per semester. Can volunteer for session 1, session 2 or both. If you choose both, 100 hours are required.

o Health Clearance and interview required

High School Students may serve at a variety of locations throughout the region. Children's Mercy Adele hall has the most volunteer openings. We have limited availability at Children's Mercy Broadway Blvd, Blue Valley, East, Kansas, and Northland.

High School Students are placed in the following types of volunteer roles.

Emergency Department/Urgent Care Volunteers

To promote a positive hospital experience for patients and families in the Emergency Department/Urgent Care and to provide diversional play experiences (reading, coloring, etc.) for patients and/or siblings. To assist staff in maintaining a clean and safe environment

Outpatient Volunteer

To promote a positive hospital experience for patients and families in the outpatient waiting rooms and to provide diversional play experiences (reading, coloring, etc.) for patients and/or siblings. To assist staff in maintaining a clean and safe environment

Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy/Sports Medicine/Phit Kids

To promote a positive hospital experience for patients in the PT/OT department and sports medicine clinic and PHIT Kids(s). To aid PT/OT, nutrition staff in cleaning and maintaining equipment. To potentially exercise alongside a patient if needed, to aid in cooking healthy meals (PHIT KIDS ONLY). To provide diversional play experiences (reading, coloring, etc.) for patients and/or siblings in the waiting room.

Guest Services Volunteer

To promote a positive hospital experience for patients and families in all areas of the hospital. To assist staff in maintaining a clean and safe environment. You may help answer phones, walk families to their appointments, work at our information desk, provide customer service in our gift shop(s). Deliver clothing, mail, toiletries to families in need that are spending the night in one of our inpatient rooms, and/or providing support inside of our Ronald McDonald Family Room, a place of respite for our fmailies in the NICU/PICU, etc.

Family Support Kreamer Resource Center/ Library Volunteer

To create a welcoming environment in the Resource Center and recognize the needs of our families. To aid families in finding books, utilizing the computer, finding resources they need, etc. and/or to provide reading material and services at the bedside for inpatients and parents that are not in isolation.
