The Nutrition and Food Service is responsible for providing meals and nutritional care to veteran patients at the medical Center. The Food Service Worker, WG-4 is the highest skilled food service worker position in Nutrition and Food Service at the Atlanta, GA VA Medical Center. The primary purpose of the Food Service Worker, WG-4 position is to perform complex tasks, maintain quality control and give technical guidance to lower level food service workers.

- The incumbent is expected to make the final check of diet trays assembled by lower grade workers for completeness, correct food temperature, and to verify that food items on the tray are appropriate for the prescribed diet.
- Conducts tray line briefing prior to each meal.
- Advises lower grade food service workers on special diet issues and quality control issues, such as food labeling practices, equipment operation, plating techniques, tray arrangement, and practices to maintain safe temperatures of foods.
- Checks assembled trays on tray line for 100% compliance with the list of foods on the tray ticket.
- Incumbent is expected to use a computer terminal to record and retrieve recipe, menu, and inventory data and to produce printouts of such information for various work units in the kitchen.
- The incumbent is expected to follow directions in assembling, measuring, weighing, or mixing ingredients for basic formulas and other supplemental feedings.
- The incumbent is expected to provide patients with basic information about modified diets, such as explaining to a patient on a sodium restricted diet that canned vegetables must be eaten in moderation because they are typically high in salt, or telling a patient on a diabetic diet that, according to the exchange lists, cheese may be substituted for meat.
- Delivers individual nourishment, tube feedings and ward stock to appropriate patients or nursing stations. Returns overstocked tube feedings and ward stock to kitchen.
- Spot checks dish washing activities, cleaning of the serving units, tray line and dining room including floors, equipment, tables etc. to assure that sanitary standards are maintained
- Relieves for Food Service Supervisor with responsibilities of opening and closing the kitchen, checking employees in/out for duty, preparing daily work schedules, and starting and completing meal service in a timely manner.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to continuously walk and stand. Stooping, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling movements are frequent. Food Service Workers may frequently lift or move food containers and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 40 pounds with the assistance of lifting devices or others. Some assignments may involve manipulation of cumbersome, heavy objects and utensils such as washing stainless steel mixing bowls and filling beverage dispensers. Significant physical effort may be necessary to unload, store, and deliver supplies and to push/pull loaded tray carts and storage racks.
Manual dexterity is necessary to operate equipment and when handling sharp knives. Eye-hand coordination and ability to concentrate and react quickly is necessary to serve tray line and operate motorized equipment.
Working Conditions:Incumbents must be able to tolerate extremes of temperature and noise. Work is carried out in the kitchen/dish room area, which is often hot and uncomfortable. There is exposure to steam , cooking odors, and extreme of temperatures as when entering walk-in refrigeration and freezing units. There is potential for accidents/injuries including cuts, bruises, sprains, burns, sca'lds, and falls on slippery floors. Strong cleaning and sanitizing solutions, which may be skin and respiratory irritants are used frequently. Strict time demands are required to adhere to patient meal schedules.
Work is often performed in patient care setting where there may be exposure to contagious disease. May have contact with patients who occasionally demonstrate verbally and/or physically aggressive behavior.
Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
