Job Summary

NOTE: The position is contingent upon annually renewed funding from the federal Corporation for National and Community Service via the Michigan Community Service Commission and Public Allies National Office.

The University of Michigan-Dearborn seeks a Project Coordinator to support Public Allies Metro Detroit (PAMD) and The Office of Metropolitan Impact (OMI) (see: ). The goal of OMI is to further develop the volume, value, and impact of mutually beneficial community partnerships for research, teaching, learning, and service and to enhance the Chancellor’s Metropolitan Vision as a defining dimension of UM-Dearborn. As a signature program of OMI, Public Allies Metropolitan Detroit (see: ) is a nationally affiliated AmeriCorps service and leadership program that annually partners with 30-40 local nonprofits across Metro Detroit to engage and support 45 participants in a 10 month service program, and up to 40 participants in a 5 month service program (see also: ).


Public Allies Metropolitan Detroit (PAMD) has a 7-person team responsible for delivering the PAMD program. The Project Coordinator will be responsible for supporting all areas of the Public Allies Metro Detroit leadership development and service program. The Project Coordinator is responsible for:

  • Coordinating all event planning and financial transactions for all PAMD programs

  • Assisting with managing a team of Leadership Academy participants (called “Scholars”) and Partner Organizations (nonprofit host sites) have meaningful experiences with Public Allies and successfully complete the Leadership Academy program;

  • Supporting the delivery of a quality program that advances the work of the organization and positions the site for growth.


The responsibilities of the Project Coordinator include but are not limited to:

Event Planning; Administrative and Financial Management Duties

  • Prepares administrative paperwork and financial documents for the PAMD program

  • Manages and executes all Public Allies Metro Detroit events including Ally Closing Ceremonies, Meet the Allies, and Fundraising events

  • Coordinates the processing of all supply and collateral material orders and room reservations for PAMD programming

  • Processes payments in the university system including the Concur reports for both Site Directors

  • Works closely with the financial specialist to keep track of expenses and to ensure billing is charged correctly

  • Serves as point person for all PAMD communications, including website maintenance, creation of all promotional materials and drafting of articles in the UM-Dearborn Reporter

  • Assists with time keeping for AmeriCorps members, as needed

Program Management

Serves as Program Manager for successive cohorts of Scholars, as needed:

  • Assist with the Scholar interview process, from online application through selecting participants for the program, as needed

  • Manage Scholars’ completion of online service documentation, training requirements, adherence to program/placement expectations and policies, and in meeting service objectives and outcomes

  • Professionally coach Scholars in their individual professional and personal development through Individual Development Plans (IDPs) and 360 degree feedback

  • Evaluate Scholar learning and progress in meeting position objectives, particularly through review of each Scholar’s online service documentation

  • Work with Partner Organization Supervisors and other PAMD staff to develop and enter challenging, yet realistic, service objectives and outcomes for the Personal Impact Service Document and OnCorps reporting systems

  • Manage relationships with Scholars and Partner Organization Supervisors through regular communication to ensure that participants successfully complete the program

  • Complete administrative duties related to Scholar management, including maintaining Scholar files

  • Assist training manager with the design and implementation of a 5-month Leadership Development Training curriculum based on Public Allies Core Values, region-relevant training, professional development, personal growth, and life skills training

  • Assess Scholar learning and evaluate the effectiveness of core program components to ensure programmatic outcomes and performance measures are met

  • Participate in national Leadership Practice trainings and apply learning towards continuous improvement

  • Manage multiple data entry systems inclusive of Public Scholars National Office PISD, Michigan Commission for Community Service(MCSC) OnCorps, and AmeriCorps eGrants

  • Assist in special event coordination and planning, such as Meet the Scholars, and Scholar Graduation

  • Support Scholar Alumni cohorts through projects and initiatives

Partner and Community Engagement

  • Engage community and organizational partners through regular communications, updates and other activities

  • Leverage community relationships and resources to advance programmatic and organizational goals

  • Support Director of Recruitment and Outreach in Scholar/Partner Organization recruitment in keeping with Public Allies National Office’s strategy

  • Assist in site visiting and orienting new Partner Organizations to ensure that Partner Organization staff have a clear understanding of the program and are successfully enrolled by the start of the program year

  • Solicit and evaluate feedback from Partner Organizations related to satisfaction and effectiveness of the program

Organizational Advancement

  • Promote Public Allies Leadership Practice at the local level in order to increase our impact in the community

  • Represent the Public Allies Leadership Academy program at various University of Michigan-Dearborn and community events and at the annual Public Allies National Office National Leadership Institute

  • Ensure program implementation is using best practices and most recent and relevant research in the area of community engagement, youth support, social justice, and national service

Grant Compliance

  • Support keeping the program on track to achieve performance goals

  • Ensure program quality and that the program has an impact on the problems facing the communities in which it operates. This includes monitoring the service of members, including the timely and accurate documentation of member eligibility, service hours, and completion of service.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree minimum; and/or commensurate experience

  • Experience with event planning and financial management of programs, including monitoring budgets and transaction processing

  • Demonstrated volunteer management experience, including the ability to motivate, coach, and retain people to achieve results

  • Experience in team-building and collaborative leadership, as well as in restorative practices/conflict resolution and creative problem-solving

  • 1+ years of professional experience in program delivery

  • Passion for and demonstrated commitment to addressing issues of social justice and a belief in young people’s ability to lead; experience working with youth is strongly preferred

  • Significant knowledge of community resources in Detroit and experience in service delivery

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with flexibility, efficiency and diplomacy with diverse constituent groups

  • Strong critical thinking/analytical skills and an ability to be resourceful

  • Proficiency in using computer and web-based information technologies

  • A commitment to diversity/inclusion and an openness to personal and professional growth

  • Previous AmeriCorps experience highly preferred

Additional Information


The position is predominantly sedentary requiring the ability to sit, bend, stand and walk. It may require occasional stooping, reaching, stair-climbing and repetitive motions of the hands and wrist related to writing and typing at an electronic keyboard. It rarely requires kneeling, pushing/pulling and repetitive motions of the feet.

Physical demands of the position necessitate hearing, talking, handling and grasping regularly. Specific vision conditions include close vision reading. It requires the ability to operate a computer, telephone, fax, copy machine and adding machine or calculator.


The position is generally performed in an office environment. The noise level is generally moderate. The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position.
