Children's Home and Aid Junior Accountant - Accounts Payable in Chicago, Illinois

Join our Finance team and be a part of the infrastructure that supports our mission of creating hope, opportunity and bright futures for at-risk children, youth and families. The Junior Accountant performs basic accounts payable (AP) tasks, including processing expense reports, reconciling credit card receipts, and reimbursing petty cash accounts. The Junior Accountant reports to the Accounts Payable Supervisor.

Junior Accountant responsibilities include:

  • Review and process check requisitions for payment.

  • Obtain authorized signatures on accounts payable checks as required.

  • Review, confirm, and verify accuracy of invoices using GAAP principles prior to entry into accounting software system.

  • Research disputed accounts payable invoices and track and document resolutions.

  • Process employee expense reports.

  • Maintain organized vendor and invoice files, and process payments to vendors within established timeframes.

  • Maintain a daily ledger of disputes, discrepancies, and resolutions.

  • Review all petty cash reimbursements and assist in petty cash reconciliation process.


  • Two years of college study with an emphasis on accounting or bookkeeping, plus two years relevant experience --OR-- High School diploma/GED plus five years relevant experience

  • Experience with Great Plains software a plus.

  • Familiarity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) preferred.

  • Strong skills in utilizing Microsoft Office Suite with an emphasis on Excel required.

  • Excellent analytical skills required.

  • Able to work independently on multiple projects/tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
