Job Description

The Office of Design is looking to hire a Design Technician Specialist that will be part of a team gathering topographic data through the science of photogrammetry to develop 3-dimensional digital models representing the ground and features that exist in the area of a proposed highway improvement project site. This information will be used by highway planners and designers in the project development process. The individual selected for this position will be an essential member of a team that collaborates with numerous stake holders to develop highly accurate topographic models through the use of innovative photogrammetric applications and processes. Having an understanding of the principals of photogrammetry will be a benefit.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Performs aerial triangulation, data compilation and planimetric mapping to generate 3-dimensional ground surfaces.

  • Creates an electronic data base that accurately represents the ground surface of the area encompassing a transportation project.

  • Ensures that all photogrammetry products are highly accurate because the products are used in computations for roadway alignments, roadway design templates, drainage areas for bridges and culverts, earthwork quantities, and right-of-way needs for a project.

  • Participates in activities with the field survey staff to ensure that photogrammetric data and field gathered data for a project site fit together well and when combined encompass a complete and accurate representation of the project site.

  • Uses advanced computer applications and processes in all aspects of the photogrammetric process.

Special Requirement:

  • This position requires the selected individual to have the ability to detect differences in distance using stereoscopic cues presented to your two eyes (stereo acuity - the ability to see in 3-dimensions).

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from high school or GED and eight years of full-time experience in design drafting, cartography, photogrammetry or right of way;


an equivalent combination of one year experience in engineering survey, soils survey, land survey or construction inspection for each year of the required design drafting experience to a maximum substitution of two years;


an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting thirty semester hours of post high school education for each year of the required experience to a maximum substitution of two years;


an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting thirty semester hours of vocational technical school in engineering technology, design drafting, or cartography for two years of the required experience to a maximum substitution of two years;


employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to one year of full time work as a Design Technician.
